The Best Vaporizer Pens Guide

Identifying which vaporizer is the best one for your own needs can certainly be confusing, and often overwhelming.

With a vast variety of different options and features to look at, how can you figure out which are the most important for your own use?

vape pen guide logo

One of the best—and most crucial—things to do is conduct in-depth research before you purchase a new vaporizer.

This is particularly true when you are looking at more high-end vapes with price tags around $300. Luckily for you, this review has the research segment covered.

Throughout the past 5 years, I have personally tested literally hundreds of different vaporizers. These came from brands all across the board, with many of them matching the advertised performance, and many of them falling short.

The following two lists are my top picks for the best vaporizers to use in 2016. These vaporizers are all designed to work with dry herbs, though some will work perfectly with concentrates, too. Depending upon your preferences, you may want a vape equipped to work with both forms.

If you strictly want the best wax vape pens; well we have that covered too!

Each and Every Vape is Unique

When attempting to pinpoint what vaporizer is the “Best Vaporizer,” one of the biggest factors to keep in mind is the price. It isn’t exactly fair to compare a $300 model with a $50 model, so I have separated the vaporizers into two unique lists. These lists are:

  • Top 10 High-End Vaporizers (Over $200)
  • Top 10 Beginner Vaporizers (Up To $200)

Top-Rated High-End Vapes

Vaporizers that fall into this particular category will be more expensive, but they will also offer the most efficient and most enjoyable experience. They have the most powerful and precise settings of any vaporizers that are currently on the market. They often last for many years, and are even protected by manufacturer warranties spanning from 2-10 years. If you are serious about vaping and don’t mind spending a little extra cash, this list is perfect for you.

In many ways, the Atmos Jump is everything that you could look for in a vaporizer. It does lack advanced features—like temperature control—but even so, the performance was high above any expectations that I had. The vapor clouds were thick and large, and the flavor came out smooth and crisp. Vape pens have come a long way, as similar models from two years ago didn’t have half the performance of the Atmos Jump. This is definitely one of the best vaporizers that you can invest in for a low price point.

Best All-Around Vaporizer: Firefly 2

The Firefly 2 can be used both with dry herb and concentrate. Not only is it compatible with both forms, but the performance on both is outstanding. Overall, it is the most efficient vaporizer and can save money and material over time. Its closest competition comes from the PAX 2 and the Crafty, but I am always reaching for my Firefly. The price is $330 when purchased through Firefly so it may not be the cheapest option, but it is certainly a solid investment into your vaping (stoned) future.

What is the Difference Between Vaping and Smoking?

Vaping has absolutely exploded in popularity, resulting in wide varieties of techniques and units. As vaping continues to grow, there has been an extended conversation on the differences between vaping and smoking. In fact, the differences between vaping and smoking provide a strong argument for the comparative benefits of choosing to vape instead of smoke.

smoking vs vaping differences

There are a few crucial differences between the two processes. Here is a quick outline of how the process of traditional smoking works:

Smoking

  • Dry herbs undergo combustion at temperatures around 2,000 degrees
  • 80% of smoke comes from carcinogens, toxins, and tar
  • Extended smoking is required to get the best effects
  • Smoking results in breathing disorders
Vaporizing

  • Dry herbs are vaporized at temperatures around 280 degrees
  • Over 95% of the vapor consists of pure cannabinoids
  • Desired effects happen after only a few draws
  • Toxin production is minimal or zero

The biggest difference between the two comes from the utilization of temperature. Higher temperatures used in traditional smoking tend to create higher levels of toxins while burning up essential oils needed for desired effects. In contrast, vaporizers use precise temperatures to draw out the most beneficial elements possible, while avoiding the production of potentially harmful toxins.

Overall, the ability to get stronger effects through less effort and less harmful toxins is what sets vaporizers apart. This is also why they are growing in popularity, and this popularity is projected only to increase. With so many crucial benefits, it’s difficult to ignore that vaping often is the best alternative to traditional smoking.

How Do Vaporizers Work?

Overall, the ability to get stronger effects through less effort and less harmful toxins is what sets vaporizers apart. This is also why they are growing in popularity, and this popularity is projected only to increase. With so many crucial benefits, it’s difficult to ignore that vaping often is the best alternative to traditional smoking.

To produce vapor, a vaporizer can use either of these two heating methods:

  • Conduction

Essential oils are released by direct contact with a heat source. While generally effective, the only drawback is when the material does not touch the heat source. When heat is increased, the material may combust, preventing vaporization.

  • Convection

Essential oils are released by blowing heated air over the material. This is a more comprehensive and thorough form of heating, but these vaporizers tend to be more expensive, as this requires advanced temperature control.

When looking for a vaporizer, the best bet is to find one that utilizes convection. Although the vaporizer will be more expensive, it will provide a more reliable and effective performance overall.

Different Kinds of Vaporizers

With the upsurge in popularity of vaporizers, there are plenty of models to choose from, a fact which is easily seen from the lists above. While there are some models that are made for a variety of uses, there are others that concentrate on using one or two methods to create vapor. To provide a better understanding of how to best choose the right vaporizer, this review will offer a quick outline of two different models: dry herb and concentrate.

Dry Herb Vaporizers

Dry herb vaporizers are specifically formatted to use vaporization—heating to a specific temperature—in order to turn essential elements of dry herbs into a vapor. Dry herb vaporizers can either be purchased in portable or desktop versions for in-home use, with portable versions being the most popular.

Portable dry herb vaporizers

These are small, easy to carry, and typically made out of glass. The heating system is powered by a battery, making them easy to use. All you need to do is turn it on, and you can enjoy vaping in any environment.

Desktop dry herb vaporizers

These vaporizers are generally much bigger and are best used in the privacy and comfort of your home. Along with a larger size, they also offer greater functionality and durability. In comparison to portable vaporizers, they are too large to run just off batteries, so they are plugged directly into the wall.

Dry herb vaporizers are commonly used by people who like to smoke tobacco since they offer a similar, natural taste of dry herbs. Both portable and desktop versions offer different methods and results, but they both are formatted specifically for dry herbs.

Concentrate Vaporizers

With concentrate vaporizers steadily growing in popularity, there has been a huge upsurge in their availability. In fact, many vaporizers look to combine dry herb and concentrate functions to provide more dynamic vapes. When looking for a concentrate vaporizer, keep in mind that there are four general forms of Marijuana concentrate:

Shatter

Just as the name implies, this concentrate is a glass-like substance that can break apart when dropped on a hard surface. The draw to this sort of concentrate is that it contains as much as 80% of the essential oils used in vaporization.

Crumble

This concentrate is one of the easiest to handle, as it can be broken apart into desired shapes and sizes. It has one of the most potent flavors, which makes it a desirable concentrate for vaporizers.

Budder

In terms of consistency, budder tends to rest somewhere between wax and crumble. It is rich in flavor, but the smooth and viscous consistency might be difficult to manage if it is too warm.

Wax

The best way to handle wax is by using a dab tool, since wax can be messy. Many forms of wax come with additional flavors, like menthol, strawberry, or watermelon.

Depending upon your vaping preferences, you may want to look for vaporizers that specialize in using concentrate. Luckily enough, if you prefer a little more versatility from your vaporizer, there are plenty of top-rated models that offer easy access to both dry herb and concentrate.
